Biography

Mike McCormick began his mosaic career by making a table for his kitchen in the only space available at the time; his living room. He crafted and sold his first mosaic tables to La Maison Café in Los Angeles and his clients and his art grew from there. After 25 years in a sales and marketing career, he escaped the corporate world and traded in his pinstripe suit for a pair of nippers. A native of Connecticut, Mike now has his own studio in Long Beach, California where he designs and handcrafts high quality mosaics, operates a gallery, and an education center offering group and private workshops.
Mike's mosaics have evolved from designing bistro tables and chairs to commissioned work for public art and architecture. Inspired by Antonio Gaudi's use of tile pieces he has developed his own unique mosaic style. In the last several years he has developed a process for creating mosaic tile portraits and has completed a series of portraits of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as well as commissioned portraits for private clients. His latest endeavor is a series of religious iconic art such as found in the great cathedrals of Europe.
Relying on his natural affinity for vibrant colors and surface treatments Mike incorporates a variety of materials including stone, glass tessarae, stained glass, ceramic and porcelain tile. Glazing his own tiles, he can match most color pallets from paint chips or fabric samples. All of his mosaics are created with exterior materials to stand the test of time.
